When I first began my journey in photography, I’d look at other photographers who had “made it.” I idolized them, imagining what it would be like to have a business like theirs. I thought, “One day, I’ll have a successful photography business like they do. One day I will be the most sought-after photograher.” But this “one day” mindset was exactly what was holding me back.
The turning point came about a year in when I decided to shift my mindset and go all-in. I stopped waiting for “one day” to arrive and started showing up like I already was the most sought-after photographer in Seattle. Instead of waiting until I had a fully booked schedule or the “perfect” portfolio, I began to act as if I already had everything I needed. I told everyone I knew that I had a photography business, and I showed up everywhere I could, like I was the biggest photographer in town. I didn’t wait to feel “ready”—I simply started.
And guess what? That decision to “fake it until I made it” worked. Within a year, my photography business was close to earning as much as I did in my nursing career, and my calendar was booked months in advance. My confidence grew because I was taking real steps to build my business, not waiting for the stars to align.
Fast forward to today, and that initial leap has grown into a business that’s far beyond anything I could have imagined. Now, 14 years later, my business brings in multiple six figures annually and captures hundreds of families every year through family, newborn, and school photography sessions. I even have two employees who are also photographers, all because I chose to show up as if I already was the photographer I aspired to be.
Why “One Day” Isn’t Enough
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that there’s no magical “one day” when everything suddenly clicks into place and you feel like you are the most sought-after photographer in your area. Waiting until you feel completely ready can keep you stuck. You’ll never feel like you know everything there is to know, and you’ll never have everything perfectly figured out. The truth is, no one does when they start. You have to show up now and believe that you already are the photographer you want to become.
