How Attending Photography Conferences Changed My Life

In 2012, I made a decision that completely shifted the course of my life. At the time, I was working full-time night shifts as a NICU nurse, raising a four-year-old and a one-year-old, and running a small photography side hustle. I never imagined photography could become a full-time career. Honestly, I didn’t even know it was possible for anyone, not before i started going to Photography Conferences.

That all changed when I stumbled across a conversation in an online photography forum. Photographers were buzzing about an event called WPPI, one of the largest photography conferences in the industry. I had no idea what WPPI was, but something about it pulled me in. Even though I had no intention of turning photography into a business, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed to go.

One day, I saw a post from someone in the forum who needed a roommate for WPPI. On a whim, and with more courage than I realized I had, I typed back: “I’ll go.”

Why Photography Conferences Can Be Life-Changing

That one split-second decision sent me on a journey I will never forget. I scraped together every penny to pay for airfare, a hotel, and a ticket. I left my babies for the first time ever. I boarded a plane to meet someone I had only ever spoken to online.

It was terrifying, but I went.

I sat in talk after talk, soaking up every word. My mind had never been expanded like that before. I met people who would become lifelong friends. And I left WPPI thinking, I want THAT. At the time, I didn’t even know what “that” was. But I knew I wanted to make this photography thing work. I wanted to create a business that was real, sustainable, and mine.

That trip opened my eyes to a world I didn’t even know existed. I met photographers who were living my dream, making real money, and building full-time businesses doing what they love. Attending that photography conference didn’t just inspire me, it made me believe that if they could do it, so could I.

From Student to Speaker

Now, thirteen years later, I am stepping onto the stage as a Platform Speaker at the very event that once felt like a distant dream. My past self wouldn’t have dared to dream this big. But here I am.
