Community Leader – Rebecca Lueck

Today we talk with Community Leader Rebecca Lueck from Portland, OR.

What genre(s) do you photograph and how long have you been in business?

I do Adventure family and couples photography, since 2010.

What would you say is your photography super power?

Making people feel comfortable enough to relax and be in the moment together.

What is your favorite personal development resource and why? Podcast, books, IG accounts? Please share one or two.

I recently read Big Magic and it was eye opening! But I am always listening to podcasts and my current favorite is Jai Long’s Make Your Break because he thinks about things from a new perspective and is really inspiring.

Who are your favorite photographers?

Right now I am really loving Jodi Lynn, Nina Turek, Amber Walder and Olesya Alferenko.

How do you find the courage to be different?

The art we create is partly for our clients, but it’s largely for us. So really, we can do whatever the heck we want and it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Sure, you need to create images your client will like, but if they’ve hired you then they trust you. So have fun with it! Even if it’s just for a little while at the end of the session. And if they don’t end up liking the weird things you try, that’s okay, too, because you like it and that’s all that matters.

Did you have a tipping point…like when you knew you had “made it?”

hmmm… I got a troll comment on a reel I made this month so I’m pretty sure that’s a sign!

What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who was just starting out?

Photography is really fun, exciting, and makes you happy when you have a great session and create images that you are super proud of. But the business of photography isn’t just taking photos. Figuring out how to run a successful business will take a lot of work and time, a lot of number crunching (yes, you seriously need to crunch the numbers!), and tons of dedication. It’s also very much about mindset and believing in yourself, as well as possessing the people skills to make your clients feel comfortable around you and give them a good experience. And when all of that comes together, magic happens. I hope you’re ready for it.
