The Myth of the “Do-It-All” Mom
There is a common misconception in the creative world that to be a “successful” mother and business owner, you must be able to do everything simultaneously replying to emails while playing Legos or editing galleries during nap time. In this episode, I break down exactly why this mindset is a recipe for burnout. I share my personal history of building an empire from my dining room, starting as a young mom and nurse who felt isolated and lost before finding my voice through a camera lens.
Why Support is Not a Source of Guilt
I get incredibly transparent about the fact that I did not build my business alone. Many photographers hesitate to invest in photography business childcare because of a sense of “mom guilt,” but I argue that the opposite should be true. By hiring help starting with a nanny, Jenny, for just a few hours a week I was able to stop being “50% mom and 50% business owner” and start being 100% present in whichever role I was currently occupying. When you have dedicated work hours, you can focus on growth; when you are with your children, you can put the phone away and be truly there.
Building an Empire and an Example
For me, the decision to get help wasn’t just about making more money though I eventually tripled my nursing salary as a photographer. It was about showing my children what is possible when you pursue art with professionalism and dedication. My 18-year-old son, now entering a top music school, grew up watching his mother turn creativity into a thriving career. If you’ve been feeling guilty about needing help or wondering if you’re “stay-at-home” enough, this episode is a must-listen. It’s time to stop spreading yourself thin and start treating your business with the respect it deserves.
