How to Find a Photography Mentor? Elena S Blair Photography Mastermind

I know that choosing a photography coach/mentor is a deeply personal and challenging decision. But it is your job as the photography student to make sure you are choosing wisely.

You are trusting this person to be part of your very important journey so it is important that you make sure they are a good fit.

Here are some tips when you are trying to decide who you should choose for a photography mentor.

Are they kind?

Pay attention to how they speak on the internet and elsewhere. Is their energy supportive and kind or is it harsh? I very much dislike any language like “the mistakes you are making,” or “let me show you the three things you are doing wrong.” This means the mentor is tearing you down so that they can build you back up. Not a positive way to start if you ask me.

Have they been or are they at a place where you want to be?

I see many educators teaching skill they have yet to become an expert in. I see educators teaching about business when their biz is still not off the ground. A photographer who is teaching about business should have the years of experience to back their expertise AND the stats, meaning they should be booking clients regularly as well as have a profitable photography business. If they are profitable only because of their education and NOT because of their portrait business then they may not be a reliable source.

Beware of {false} guarantees.

I tell every single photography mastermind student that I can’t guarantee anything except that they will build a beautiful community. Why? Because a guarantee would be a lie. I don’t know what you will do with the information I share. That is on you. We are co-creating in our coaching relationship. I do guarantee that I will show up for you, but if you show up or not is not in my hands. So any program that guarantees a certain level of monetary results “X figures, X bookings,” etc isn’t being truthful.

** My alumni are killing it, however. Doubling or tripling their income and bookings, refining their brands, and overall becoming more fulfilled.

That leads me to the final suggestion…

Read the reviews.

We are all going to sing our our photography coaching program praises. Make sure you check out past student reviews. If there aren’t reviews because the program is new, make double sure you really consider my other suggestions.
