Why Building a Photography Business Might Be the Lifeline You Need

How to start a photography business

Eighteen years ago, when my son was born, I picked up a camera. I didn’t do it as part of some grand corporate masterplan I did it 100% for me. I needed a creative outlet like I needed air to breathe.

Two years later, when my first baby girl arrived, that creative outlet shifted into something more: a real business. And that time, I did it 100% for them.

I knew in my gut that I could create a better life for my family, and something told me that learning how to start a photography business was going to be the exact vehicle to get us there.

From NICU Nurse to Full-Time Business Owner

I went all-in on my dream. When my third baby was just six months old, I made the leap and quit my job as a NICU nurse.

Leaving that career meant I could finally be present at home with my kids while generating real income on my own terms. I spent years refining my craft and mastering the backend of running a studio. Over time, my work gained international recognition, and I began traveling as a speaker and educator in our industry.

Then, seemingly overnight, my life completely shifted: I became a single mother of three.

The Business That Sustained Us

Suddenly, I had to financially support my family entirely on my own. And that “little photography hobby” I had started years earlier was more than capable of providing for us.

Every evening missed for a photoshoot, every late night staying up figuring out marketing systems, pricing, and workflows on my own it was all for my kids.

Creative Need ➜ Systemized Studio ➜ Financial Freedom & Presence

Eventually, I started over and met the love of my life, expanding my family to four incredible children. Together, we built a multi-six-figure company right from our dining room table.

What started as a quiet creative outlet turned into a mini empire. It allowed me to give my kids a life I never even dared to dream was possible, while being the present mom I always wanted to be.

Why You Can Build This Too

Today, all of my kids are serious performing artists. They saw their mom working hard for them, and they know in their bones that they can build a life as artists, too.

If you are standing at the edge wondering if building a successful photography business is worth the leap, let this be your sign.

You don’t need a fancy corporate degree or decades of business experience to make this work. Now, my mission is helping other mothers and photographers build profitable, sustainable studios on their own terms. Because if a mom with a camera can do it, you can too.

Start that business. It may just be your lifeline, and it may just be how you build the life of your dreams.
