If I were a lifestyle family photographer and wanted to make sure I brought in at least $5K a month during the cold winter season, I would stop trying to force more outdoor family sessions onto my calendar.
After 16 years running my studio, I know how this cycle goes. Peak fall season is insane, you’re working every weekend, and then January hits. The weather turns terrible, families aren’t exactly lining up for outdoor portraits in freezing temperatures, and suddenly you’re wondering where all your revenue went.
Learning how to make $5k a month as a family photographer in the winter doesn’t mean hustling twice as hard it means diversifying where your money comes from.
Here is the exact playbook I would use instead.

1. I Would Book One Small Preschool
Seriously, that is where I would start every single time.
My very first preschool had only about 50 kids and generated roughly $3,000 in sales. You do not need a giant public elementary school with 800 students to make meaningful money with boutique school photos.
Book a local preschool or daycare with 50 to 100 students, and suddenly a huge chunk of that $5K monthly goal comes from one or two simple picture days rather than trying to hunt down ten individual families who want outdoor winter photos.
2. I Would Offer In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Sessions
Babies don’t care that it’s freezing outside in January!
Lifestyle newborn photography was always a crucial pillar of my studio because it isn’t nearly as seasonal as outdoor family portraits. As a lifestyle photographer, you don’t need an expensive commercial studio you bring your camera right into the client’s warm living room or nursery.
I would make sure my website is optimized for local newborn photography search terms, share lifestyle newborn work consistently, and highlight the convenience of cozy, in-home sessions. Two $1,000 newborn sessions gets you another $2,000.
Now you’re at your $5K goal without shivering outside!
3. I Would Stop Discounting Prices Out of Panic
This is the classic trap so many photographers fall into.
Your booking calendar gets quiet, panic sets in, and suddenly you’re creating a discounted “winter mini session special” that nobody actually asked for.
I wouldn’t lower my prices or devalue my brand. I would simply diversify my revenue streams. If one school brings in $3K and two in-home newborn sessions bring in $2K, you hit your $5K goal without shooting ten discounted sessions or giving up your weekends trying to manufacture outdoor demand that isn’t naturally there.
4. I Would Use School Photography to Feed My Spring Booking Calendar
Here is the best part about this strategy: every school you photograph puts your artistic brand directly in front of dozens—or even hundreds—of local parents with young kids.
Those parents are your future private family clients. So while boutique school picture days are bringing reliable income into your business during January and February, they are simultaneously marketing your studio for spring, summer, and fall. You are getting paid to market to your ideal clients.
Stop Accepting Winter as a Slow Season
You do not have to accept that winter automatically means making less money or stressing over an empty bank account. You simply need more than one way to make money using the exact skills you already possess.
